Soft grain compression: beyond the jamming point
We present the experimental studies of highly strained soft bidisperse
granular systems made of hyperelastic and plastic particles. We explore the
behavior of granular matter deep in the jammed state from local field
measurement from the grain scale to the global scale. By mean of digital image
correlation and accurate image recording we measure for each compression step
the evolution of the particle geometries and their right Cauchy-Green strain
tensor fields. We analyze the evolution of the usual macroscopic observables
(stress, packing fraction, coordination, fraction of non-rattlers,
\textit{etc}.) along the compression process through the jamming point and far
beyond. We also analyze the evolution of the local strain statistics and
evidence a crossover in the material behavior deep in the jammed state. We show
that this crossover depends on the particle material. We argue that the strain
field is a reliable observable to describe the evolution of a granular system
through the jamming transition and deep in the dense packing state whatever is
the material behavior.Comment: 10 figure
Realization of a single-chip, SiGe:C-based power amplifier for multi-band WiMAX applications
A fully-integrated Multi-Band PA using 0.25 μm SiGe:C process with an output power of above 25 dBm is presented. The behaviour of the amplifier has been optimized for multi-band operation covering, 2.4 GHz, 3.6 GHz and 5.4 GHz (UWB-WiMAX) frequency bands for higher 1-dB compression point and efficiency. Multi-band operation is achieved using multi-stage topology. Parasitic components of active devices are also used as matching components, in turn
decreasing the number of matching component. Measurement results of the PA provided the following performance parameters: 1-dB compression point of 20.5 dBm, gain value of 23 dB and efficiency value of %7 operation for the 2.4 GHz band; 1-dB compression point of 25.5 dBm, gain value of 31.5 dB and efficiency value of %17.5 for the 3.6 GHz band; 1-dB compression point of 22.4 dBm, gain value of 24.4 dB and efficiency value of %9.5 for the 5.4 GHz band. Measurement
results show that using multi-stage topologies and implementing each parasitic as part of the matching network component has provided a wider-band operation with higher output power levels, above 25 dBm, with SiGe:C process
Absence of lattice strain anomalies at the electronic topological transition in zinc at high pressure
High pressure structural distortions of the hexagonal close packed (hcp)
element zinc have been a subject of controversy. Earlier experimental results
and theory showed a large anomaly in lattice strain with compression in zinc at
about 10 GPa which was explained theoretically by a change in Fermi surface
topology. Later hydrostatic experiments showed no such anomaly, resulting in a
discrepancy between theory and experiment. We have computed the compression and
lattice strain of hcp zinc over a wide range of compressions using the
linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method paying special attention to
k-point convergence. We find that the behavior of the lattice strain is
strongly dependent on k-point sampling, and with large k-point sets the
previously computed anomaly in lattice parameters under compression disappears,
in agreement with recent experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, Phys. Rev. B (in press
Coding of non-stationary sources as a foundation for detecting change points and outliers in binary time-series
An interesting scheme for estimating and adapting distributions in real-time for non-stationary data has recently been the focus of study for several different tasks relating to time series and data mining, namely change point detection, outlier detection and online compression/sequence prediction. An appealing feature is that unlike more sophisticated procedures, it is as fast as the related stationary procedures which are simply modified through discounting or windowing. The discount scheme makes older observations lose their influence on new predictions. The authors of this article recently used a discount scheme for introducing an adaptive version of the Context Tree Weighting compression algorithm. The mentioned change point and outlier detection methods rely on the changing compression ratio of an online compression algorithm. Here we are beginning to provide theoretical foundations for the use of these adaptive estimation procedures that have already shown practical promise
Multi-rate, real time image compression for images dominated by point sources
An image compression system recently developed for compression of digital images dominated by point sources is presented. Encoding consists of minimum-mean removal, vector quantization, adaptive threshold truncation, and modified Huffman encoding. Simulations are presented showing that the peaks corresponding to point sources can be transmitted losslessly for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and high point source densities while maintaining a reduced output bit rate. Encoding and decoding hardware has been built and tested which processes 552,960 12-bit pixels per second at compression rates of 10:1 and 4:1. Simulation results are presented for the 10:1 case only
